Abstract
Childhood-onset Type 1 diabetes and cardiovascular disease
Author(s): Reena Perchard & Rakesh AminCardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in people with Type 1 diabetes (T1D), and improvements in CVD outcomes in the general population in recent decades are not mirrored in T1D populations. It is likely that CVD outcomes are worse for childhood-onset T1D due to a longer duration of disease and other important pathophysiological factors. However, repeated surveys show that screening for and treatment of CVD risk factors during adolescence is currently extremely poor. Here, we provide an overview of CVD in T1D, with a focus on aspects relevant to pediatric diabetes healthcare practitioners.
