Author(s): G Nahlawi & SJ BrenerCardiovascular disease accounts for the majority of nonaccidental adult deaths in the USA. According to 2011 mortality data, an acute coronary event (acute coronary syndrome [ACS]) occurs every 30 s and is fatal in half of these cases. Most of the deaths are related to acute plaque disruption in the coronary tree, which causes ACS.
