New journal for the interventional cardiology community

Abstract

We are pleased to announce a new journal for the interventional cardiology community. Interventional cardiology is a relatively young field celebrating 32 years of percutaneous revascularization and device, technique and strategy invention to optimize procedures and the care provided to our patients. With passion, innovation and science, the field of interventional cardiology continues to evolve and renew itself. It has adopted evidence-based, data-driven medicine as its beacon; and it is critical that the data generated be brought to press. It is our hope that Interventional Cardiology will serve as a reference point to help our physician colleagues understand the ever-changing concepts, achievements and trial results in this subspecialty. A variety of disciplines, including adult cardiology, pediatric cardiology, radiology, surgery, pathology and many basic sciences, have made and will continue to make major contributions to the field.

Coronary heart disease is currently the leading cause of death globally, and is expected to account for 14.2% of all deaths by 2030. New therapies have evolved over the past decade as knowledge of the pathophysiology of heart disease has increased; and the emergence of novel technologies in interventional cardiology is a welcome development in the light of an overwhelming chronic disease burden. It is expected that technology development and trends in clinical practice will continue on all fronts for years to come towards increasingly low-cost, low-invasive, optimal end points. Developments are often so rapid, however, that before long-term outcomes can be assessed, a new technology has likely replaced the most recent one. Thus, we intend to actively seek and subsequently publish novel ideas and preliminary data in as timely, inherent and intelligible a manner as possible.

Major areas of focus in this first issue include an original research article regarding the management of patients with impaired response to antiplatelet agents; a novel perspective on the Society for Vascular Surgery’s clinical practice guidelines for carotid revascularization; and numerous review articles discussing, among others, topics such as bleeding complications after percutaneous coronary intervention, percutaneous treatments for atrial fibrillation and the role of optical coherence tomography in interventional cardiology.

The array of subjects in this inaugural issue of Interventional Cardiology underscores the need to understand this broad field. Our goal is to provide an eminent forum for the newer and more creative aspects of interventional cardiology. To achieve this goal, we will not only rely on the efforts of our editorial board, but on the support and contributions of our readers. We are enthusiastic in our endeavour and hope that you will share with us this level of enthusiasm as a reader or contributor. We look forward to your dynamic participation in bringing these goals to realization.
