Amniocentesis

Amniotic fluid surrounds the baby in the womb. Amniocentesis is a procedure in which a doctor used to remove the small amount of amniotic fluid from the uterus. This procedure removes not more than the 28 grams of fluid. This fluid contains some of the baby cell and this cell is used to find out the baby has any genetic abnormalities. This type of procedure (amniocentesis) is usually performed only in the second trimester or after 15th week. This procedure is used to determine that the baby lungs are mature enough to survive outside the womb. It is performed by ultrasound to guide to determine a safe location for the needle to enter the amniotic sac, so the fluid may be safely removed. This procedure is mainly done to detect chromosome abnormalities, neural tube defects, and genetic disorder.
