Aquatic Resources

Aquatic services are important to livelihoods and are a key component of local people's welfare. Their strategies for living include the use of multiple resources. River fishing requires a certain degree of specialisation. The changing nature of the environment caused by the water flow fluctuations and the seasonal fish activities, some of which are migratory, require specific knowledge and equipment. Boats, specialized nets and other gear are needed to fish successfully in rivers and large streams. They serve an important purpose by collecting, and keeping, excess water during the rainy season. Such bodies of water are typically shallow and vary considerably in size throughout the year, increasing throughout the rainy season and receding during the dry season. They also act as an aquatic lung, receiving water directly from a rising river or stream during the rainy season, and then draining it back into the river or stream as the water level drops in the river or stream.
