Bone Scan

Bone scan is an imaging test used to diagnose problems with the bones. It safely uses a very small amount of radioactive drug called radiopharmaceutical. It is also called "dye", but it does not stain the tissue. Bone scans can be used to determine whether cancer has spread to bones from another area of the body, such as the prostate or breast. Bone scans may reveal bone problems related to arthritis, blood vessel necrosis, bone cancer, fibrosis dysplasia, fractures, etc. Bone scanning involves no greater risk than regular x-rays. Tracers of the radioactive material used in bone testing produce little radiation exposure. The risk of allergic reaction to tracers is low. However, the test may not be safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women.
