Diabetic Retinopathy
Diabetic retinopathy is a damage of the
retina caused by
diabetes mellitus complications. If left untreated the condition will lead to blindness. With routine checks and effective management of the underlying diabetes, early blindness due to
diabetic retinopathy (DR) is usually preventable. DR is damage to the blood vessels in the
retina which is caused by diabetes. Symptoms include blurred vision, color difficulties, floaters and even total vision loss. People with
diabetes will have their vision tested to rule out DR at least once per annum. There are retinal surgeries that can relieve symptoms but the most effective way to prevent DR is to control
diabetes and manage early symptoms.
