Epigallocatechin
Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), also known as epigallocatechin-3-gallate, is a type of catechin and an ester of
epigallocatechin and gallic acid. EGCG – the most abundant catechin in tea – is a polyphenol for its potential to affect human
health and disease, under basic research. EGCG is used in many dietary additives.
Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is a unique
plant compound that receives considerable attention for its potential positive
health impact. Reducing inflammation, aiding weight loss, and helping prevent heart and
brain disease, is thought. EGCG has poor absorption even at daily intake equivalent to 8–16 cups of
green tea when taken orally, a quantity which causes adverse effects such as nausea or heartburn. EGCG blood levels peak within 1.7 hours after consumption. The absorbed half-life of the plasma is ~5 hours, but with most unchanged EGCG excreted from 0 to 8 hours into the urine.
