External Radiation

External radiation (also known as external beam radiation) is the most common type of radiation therapy which is used for cancer treatment. A machine is used to aim high-energy rays from outside the body into the tumor. The Radiation technology allows the very careful delivery of external beam radiation to the body. These machines focus the radiation on the exact location where it needs to be, so that normal tissues are affected as little as possible. External beam radiation therapy usually delivers X-rays (also called photons) but can also use electrons or other rarer particles such as protons. These have different properties which can be useful for different cancers or settings.
