Immunogenetics
Immunogenetics is the medical
genetics branch that studies the relationship between the
immune system and genetics. Autoimmune diseases, such as type 1 diabetes, are complex genetic traits that are the result of
immune system defects. Identifying genes which define immune defects can identify new target genes for therapeutic approaches. It is the study of the genetic basis of the immune response. It includes the study of normal immunological pathways and the identification of genetic variations that result in immune defects, which may result in the identification of new therapeutic targets for immune diseases. Since genetic factors may influence immune responses, and immunogenetic associations serve as a predictor of disease development and as a biological indicator of disease progression, the study of
immunogenetics is important for basic
genetics and immunology, as well as for translation and personalized medicine.
